Toxicity in Guitar-Focused Social Media Reels

Since diving back into guitar, I’ve noticed a flood of guitar content in my feed, and honestly, the comments are some of the most toxic I’ve ever seen. In nearly every short-form guitar video, anywhere from 10% to 40% of the comments seem pretty harsh.

It doesn’t feel like simple trolling either many seem rooted in jealousy or some need to prove they’re a “better” guitarist who “really understands what it takes.” Every video showcasing technical skill or a great solo is met with comments like “Mediocre at best,” “All technique, no soul,” or “It’s just a scale exercise.” It’s like people are determined to tear others down, regardless of how impressive the performance is.

While I know social media is filled with negativity, the guitar community in these videos seems especially harsh compared to others. Even my Twitter/X experience feels more positive. It’s just a strange, almost competitive toxicity that seems prevalent.

Totally get what you mean. I’ve been playing guitar for years and it’s sad to see that side of the community. People love to act like gatekeepers, as if they hold the keys to what makes “real” music. It’s such a turn-off, especially for new players. Just enjoy the music!

This really hits home. It feels like some guitarists just want to show off their “superior” knowledge instead of appreciating someone else’s skill or style. Like, why does everything have to be a competition? The music world is supposed to be a creative space, not a battleground.

That’s a big reason I avoid comment sections on guitar videos now. There’s always that one person saying “this is trash” or “no soul,” and it ruins the vibe. And it’s ironic because some of the people they’re criticizing are insanely talented. It’s just unnecessary negativity.

Social media brings out the worst sometimes. I think a lot of it stems from insecurity. They see someone playing well, and instead of appreciating it, they feel the need to criticize to make themselves feel better. It’s easier to tear others down than to lift them up, sadly.

I think this happens because the guitar community has so many sub-genres, and some people think their niche is the only “right” way to play. Whether it’s jazz, metal, or blues, there’s always someone ready to dismiss other styles as “wrong” or “unmusical.” So silly!
