As a Guitarist how did you learn drums?

I’m primarily a guitarist, but due to my interest in production, unreliable bandmates, and other circumstances, I occasionally end up behind the drum kit. I’m not aiming to play anything like Rush, but I’d like to be able to keep up during practice sessions or fill in on a demo when needed. Any recommendations on skills, materials, or resources that could help me learn just enough to get by?

I’m in the same boat! What helped me was focusing on the basics—just solid grooves and timing. You don’t need to be flashy, but learning how to keep a steady beat is key. Try starting with a basic 4/4 rock beat and get comfortable with the hi-hat, snare, and bass drum coordination. Once you have that down, it’ll take you pretty far!

Yeah, totally agree. As a guitarist who learned drums on the side, the most important thing is timing. If you can stay in the pocket, you’ll do great. I’d recommend starting with a metronome or a drum machine to practice staying on beat. It’ll help your guitar playing too!

For sure, timing is everything! Another tip is to focus on dynamics. Don’t worry about playing fast or fancy fills—just work on hitting the drums consistently and controlling your volume. A lot of guitarists-turned-drummers tend to overplay or hit way too hard. Less is more, especially in a band setting.

When I started, I found YouTube to be a lifesaver. There are tons of tutorials that break down simple drum beats and explain coordination between your hands and feet. Check out channels like Drumeo or Stephen Taylor—they’ve got great beginner stuff that isn’t overwhelming. Plus, you can practice at your own pace.

Agreed! I’d also recommend using a practice pad to work on your hand coordination and control. It’s quieter, so you can practice more often without driving everyone crazy. Then when you get on a kit, you’ll have the basics down. And like everyone said, start simple—no one’s expecting Neil Peart here.
