How much progress should I have made after playing Acoustic Guitar for 5 months?

I’ve been playing guitar for 5 months but haven’t been too regular. I don’t know how to play chords or strum yet. I mainly do left hand exercises and play simple single string songs like Jingle Bells and Yankee Doodle. Am I on the right track or should I be practicing more?

If you don’t practice, you won’t get any better. If guitar isn’t fun for you, maybe find something else that excites you. Life’s too short to do things you don’t enjoy.

Around that time, I knew 6 full songs.

I’d say by now, you should know most of the basic open chords and be able to strum in rhythm. But hey, don’t stress, everyone learns at their own pace. Some people practice 3 hours a day, some just 10 minutes here and there. As long as you’re having fun, that’s what matters.

Progress varies for everyone. By now, you should know some basic chords, maybe the pentatonic scale, and a couple of songs.

This is a tough question to answer. Everyone is different. There’s no ‘should’ when it comes to learning a new instrument.
