I’ve been watching videos on how to set up guitars, but I’m still worried I might mess it up or forget some steps. Does anyone know a good way to learn or get help with setting up guitars? I don’t want to keep sending them to luthiers every time I need a setup.
I get along well with the people at my local music shop. I usually take my guitars there and ask for help, and they’ll either talk me through it or just do the setup for me. It depends on how busy the store is and if the boss is around. Honestly, I should be paying a service fee, but they’ve always been so helpful and kind, and they’ve waived the fee every time.
You could try asking your local shop if they’ll help you out.
Setting up a guitar is actually not too hard if you’re a hands-on person. Practice on cheaper guitars to build your skills and confidence. If you can make a cheap guitar feel and sound good without breaking it, that’s a big win!

That’s a great idea! I think I’ll stop by my local music store and grab a cheap guitar to practice on. Do you think a $60 guitar would work well for that?

I learned on used, cheap starter guitars that people were trying to get rid of. Eventually, I used them for parts and experiments too. As long as the guitar has standard construction, the price really doesn’t matter.
I can give you some lessons if you want. I charge $25 an hour.
